Congratulations to Tati Bavastrelli from the leading Italian catalogue Borgione Centro-Didattico, along with Boba Watson from the Czech furniture manufacturers MAKRA . They are the proud winners of the Gratnells Worlddidac puzzle competition and will be listening to music of their choice from brand new Apple iPods. We’re running the competition again at Worlddidac in Basel, 24 to 26 october 2012 – so don’t forget to bring your puzzle piece next time!
After a week’s hard work Worlddidac 2010, the international education supplies show in Basle, Switzerland is over for another two years. Buyers from across the world including Japan, Kazakhstan, and Venuzuela beat their way to the Gratnells stand to see our latest products and gossip. The stories they had to tell were interesting with the economic picture across the world very varied. The government in Romania has put a ban on buying school furniture for the whole of 2010 making life very difficult there. Our Greek customer was trying to expand across Southern Europe to escape the economic misery in his country. According to our leading supplier in Italy 20% of school suppliers have closed in the past year, ironically making his business better as he has picked up market share. Spain and Portugal were also struggling. On a brighter note Germany’s economic recovery has helped their school supply business and the Dutch have had a surprisingly good year. We had strong interest from Turkey, Morocco and across the Middle East. Most visitors agreed that things were looking up and it was one of the best shows ever.
One of the highlights of the show was the example of a perfect Montessori classroom built in the centre of the exhibition. The set was constructed by a leading Dutch supplier Nienhuis www.nienhuis.com who have chosen the Gratnells tray as the best tray in early learning. Local children from Basle were brought in every day and used the set for real. They must have been thrilled to get their hands on a Gratnells tray at last!
The winner of the best stand with Gratnells trays has been awarded to the German Science kit manufacturer Heliocentris Energiesysteme GmbH www.heliocentris.com A big thank you to Stefan Sonntag and the team for the great display.
To help us register all the visitors on the Worlddidac stand we invested in a fantastic machine called a CardScan from Dymo. Not only does it copy each card but it puts the names and details of each person into boxes which can then sinc into Outlook, iphones and many more. Does it work? – definitely and couldn’t recommend it more. It does exactly what is says on the box.
Awarded to Sanjeev Trivedi from Infiniti Modules P Ltd in India.
‘After the World Beer Festival, all the brewery presidents decided to go out for a drink.
The guy from Corona sat down and said, “Hey, senor, I would like the world’s best ale, a Corona.”
The bartender dusted off a bottle and gave it to him.
The guy from Australia bawled, “I’d like the best goddanged suds in the world – give me a Foster.”
The bartender opened a Foster’s and handed it over.
The guy from Budweiser stepped up and demanded, “Yo boy – give me a Bud!”
Finally the Heineken President ordered: “I’ll have a Coke, thanks.”
The bartender was taken aback but plonked a Coke on the bar.
The other brewery presidents looked over at him and asked, “Why aren’t you drinking a Heineken?”
The Henieken President took a swig and replied, “I figured if you guys weren’t drinking beer, neither would I.”

Following a visit by my father, Neville Hudson, to Brazil earlier this year we are delighted to have begun supplying one of Brazil’s leading school furniture manufacturers with Gratnells trays. This is our first partnership in South America, we hope the first of many.
One of the world’s major fairs and the largest in the Americas for the office, stationery and school sector, OFFICE PAPERBRASIL ESCOLAR- International School and Office Supplies was held at the beginning of September in Sao Paulo in Brazil and was attended by over 40,000 visitors. We were delighted to have Gratnells trays on display.
It’s big, it’s in Switzerland and it’s getting closer. The bi-annual Worlddidac education shin-dig in Basle is just over a month away and I thought it was time to unveil our stand. This year Gratnells has a massive 81m2 stand making it by far the biggest in the British Pavillion. Plenty of sofas and two coffee machines will make every visitor feel at home. I look forward to seeing you there, but beware it is very busy.
